In my village, Saping, there are many Giri families, but I am not sure where they originally came from. (This could be my future research topic.) My grandparents have five sons and two daughters, who have separate houses/families (see family tree) and their own life style. No one has completed even his or her basic education, and almost all of them survive from their farm produce. However, my illiterate parents were of progressive mind, as they worked hard to send their three children to school. I am grateful to my parents, who worked all year around to make living and also to pay school fees. Only a few families showed such a desire to educate their children. One other thing that surprises me is that my parents only have 3 children whereas the national average still stands at 5.4 children per family. In between 3 of us, my brother is six years older, and sister is almost six years younger than me. This is also probably why my parents could afford our education. As you can see in the 'Family Tree' page, among our 27 cousins, including us (from my father's side), we are the only 3 persons who have completed above secondary education. Since October 2005, my brother Birendra R. Giri is doing PhD research (UK) and submitting his final thesis in September 2008, I have completed BBS and joined BA in Economics (Netherlands) from February 2007, and my sister Neelam Giri is studying Science at V. Niketan Higher Secondary School, Minbhawan (12th grade) since July 2006 (Nepal).
